All skin types, even the oiliest, dry out with age. When I refer to skin's moisture I'm talking about both water and oil content. Oil production (by the sebaceous glands) slows with age, creating a double whammy: Not only does skin lose a major source of lubrication, it loses its protective barrier - the layer of oil, or sebum, that forms on the epidermis and locks in moisture. What will this mean to your skin? The moisture of the top layers of your skin will evaporate at a faster rate. Thus, the older you get, the more conscious you're going to have to be about hydrating your skin with nutrients. Notice I said nutrients not oils. Remember, the body made mostly of water and protein, not oils.

Dry and/or aging skin is characterized by a lack of oil and moisture caused by inadequate production of the sebaceous glands. In such cases the skin is out of balance and cannot be restored by external application of water and oils. Water and/or oils cannot penetrate the skin, and, in fact, even more moisture is taken from the surface of the skin through evaporation when water and/or oils is applied. Dry skin is more prone to forming wrinkles than any other skin type.

Dry skin lacks softness, smoothness and suppleness. It feels tight, fragile and super sensitive. It cracks, flakes or peels. You moisturize it repeatedly with little or no results. Fine lines and wrinkles appear almost overnight. You look older than your years.

If these symptoms sound familiar, you're probably suffering from dry aging skin. You're not alone. Millions of people are waging an outgoing battle against dry skin, which dermatologists and skin care specialist recognize as the most common complexion complaint.

With high hopes of restoring skin to its normal, moist and supple state, people may constantly feed their faces with the only weapons they know: creams, lotions, moisturizers and/or oils. Despite vast amounts of cosmetics applied, your skin shows little change.
