Vitamin E is a
favorite with researchers around the world and is now being recognized as one of the key
protagonists in keeping skin - and the rest of the body - safe from potential immune
break-downs. According to Dr. peter Pugliese, a skin physiologist in Bernville, PA, who
has been conducting research into the immune - boosting effects of anti - aging products
that work by stimulating immune cells to repair and restore damaged skin, one molecule of
the well - known antioxidant can attract up to 50 free - radical electrons. This activity
protects all cells from free - radical damage, including immune cells found in the
skin.Other researchers have found vitamin E helps support white blood cells in their
efforts to engulf and destroy bacteria and to boost helper T cell activity throughout the
body.
While most essential oils are
suspected of raising the number of antigen - attacking B cells when they are applied to
the skin, lavender, bergamot, and tea tree oil lead the pack in its support of the skin's
infection - fighting activity. In one Japanese study, B cell count jumped substantially
when lavender oil, bergamot, and tea tree oils were rubbed over regions of scraped skin.
These three oils also possess strong antibacterial actions, making them a good choice for
protection all the way around. |
| Purple coneflower (echinacea): Valued
as an immune booster that I have used for years for colds and flus, and to increase my
immune system, little did I know that this herb also works well when applied as an
essential oil to the skin. This herb has been used for centuries by native Americans and
frontiersmen. The flowers and roots of this beautiful plant were used as a remedy for
snake bites and for cleansing and hurrying along the healing process of abscessed wounds.
Modern research shows chemicals in the plant stimulate the production of infection -
fighting white blood cells, while plant proteins work against virus activity. Recent
evidence indicates the echinacea plant may be helpful in controlling some allergies while
may contribute to many skin problems. |
| Chamomile: By now you
have probably noticed that I take a lot about chamomile. That is because chamomile is one
of the most widely valued herbs in the plant kingdom. Chamomile is used nation-wide for
varieties of internal and external problems. Chamomile is touted by Europeans and
Americans for skin irritations and skin problems of all kinds. Now German researchers are
beginning to understand why. According to in vitro studies, levomenol (achemical found in
some chamomile varieties) has shown not only to stimulate immune cells, but also to
circumvent the need for immune cells to go into action by eliminating the attacker before
a problem is seen. Since levomenol is not in all chamomile extracts, it is wiser to look
for products listing the chemical. |
Eucalyptus, tea tree, cajeput, sage, clove
and rosemary
essential oils. Grandmother was right on
the money when she rubbed eucalyptus ointment over your chest during the cold and flu
season. Eucalyptus oil, which is a member of the volatile myrtaceae family that includes
tea tree and cloves, states an outstanding anti-infection property common to family
members. Mold, yeast, fungus, bacteria and viruses all succumb to the ant-imicrobial
activities of these oils. Since the oils work best in concert, try two or three of these
oils in a low concentrations on athlete's foot, blemishes, skin disorders, cuts, scrapes,
and fungus of the nails and/or toes.
