Parts used and where grown: The leaves of this very common kitchen herb are used in medicine as well as in cooking. Sage originally came from the area around the Mediterranean but now also grows in North America.

bulletIn what conditions might sage be supportive?
• common cold/sore throat • menopause • pregnancy and postpartum support • gingivitis (periodontal disease)
Historical or traditional use: Sage has one of the longest histories of use as a medicinal herb. It has been employed to treat cancers and excessive perspiration and to dry up milk when a woman is no longer going to breast-feed.1 Based on this antiperspiration and drying effect, sage is also used for women who are sweating due to menopause.2 Sage was also used, along with rosemary and thyme, to preserve a number of foods, including meats and cheeses.

Active constituents: The essential oil of sage contains active constituents, including ocimene, cineole, limonene, and terpinene. Several of these terpene compounds are antioxidants3 and kill a variety of bacteria.4 As yet, the mechanism of the plant in reducing lactation and sweating has not been investigated in depth.

How much should I take? A tea prepared from 2–3 U.S. teaspoons (10-15 grams) of the herb is generally used. The tea is made by steeping sage leaves in hot water in a covered container for fifteen minutes. This tea can be gargled for a sore throat, then swallowed, or it can be swallowed for other purposes. Three cups a day should be drunk. Alternatively, 4 ml of the tincture three times per day can be used.

Are there any side effects or interactions? Women who are breast-feeding should only use sage in medicinal doses if they want to dry up the flow of milk. Sage should be avoided when fever is present.
