Stretch marks are red, purple, brown or silver lines that show up suddenly between women's hips and below their belly buttons sometime during the last trimester of pregnancy. They are one of the most common and dreaded battle scars of childbearing. Sure, stretch marks are "natural," but not everything that's natural is desirable, after all, and many women are quite sure they wouldn't mind being without these particular marks of maternity.

Stretch marks occur when underlying skin tissue stretches to make room for a growing fetus but doesn't snap back to its original form without scarring after the baby is born. The stretching itself may damage elastic fibers and proteins called collagens, important pieces of the framework that holds cells together in the dermis, keeping this layer of tissues just below the surface skin smooth and strong.

Genes also play a role in the development of stretch marks. Daughters of moms with stretch marks are prone to develop their own during pregnancy.

Surgery or Mega-A?
The only way doctors have effectively and consistently removed these scarred bundles of collagen is with abdominoplasty, a surgical procedure that removes the scars. Retin-A (tretinoin), a topical drug that serves up such a megadose of vitamin A that it can't be sold over the counter, has also had some success in diminishing the appearance of stretch marks. However, it can't be used during pregnancy because it can be lethal to the fetus, and it's associated with many unwanted side effects, including peeling skin and anxiety. Fortunately, there are less invasive ways of caring for stretch marks. Many can be implemented during pregnancy to reduce or even prevent the dermal scarring before it leads to permanent damage.

Cocoa Butter Battles Scars
As with many skin conditions, the best defense is a good offense, and hydration is your starting quarterback. Areas where stretch marks occur are particularly prone to wrinkles, so be sure to drink lots of water throughout your pregnancy. Dehydration contributes to the development of wrinkles and hydration is one of the first suggestions that dermatologists make to patients who are concerned about aging.

Also, consider rubbing cocoa butter on your belly daily, starting with the day you first begin to "show." Naturopathic practitioners and herbalists frequently recommend cocoa butter for both the prevention and treatment of stretch marks. Cocoa butter cremes and cocoa butter that is warmed in the hand to make it go on more smoothly offer moisturizing nourishment for scars and dry or damaged skin.

Slick Down with Essential Oils
If straight up crème is too boring, perhaps massage oil is more appealing. Use melted cocoa butter, or jojoba, almond massage oil, or wheat germ oil as carrier oils for a few drops of essential oil.

Lavender essential oil has a particularly rich history with expectant and new mothers. In the 1600s midwives crushed and heated lavender flowers for women who had back pain during pregnancy. The flowers were also an important part of the birthing experience, and were said to raise the spirits of the new mother, baby, and their attending midwife.

Other popular essential oils include rose, tangerine, or citrus oils. Safe and effective for pregnant and nursing moms when used in tiny amounts diluted in carrier oils, these essential oils can turn cocoa butter or other ordinary unscented massage oil into something special. They also change the redundant daily moisturizing ritual into an olfactory extravaganza.

Pamper Your Skin
Pregnant and nursing women should always stick to the tried and true when it comes to skin care, and if you're trying to protect your skin from stretch marks, it's essential to cleanse the belly area with a mild natural soap—stay away from soaps with additives and synthetic perfumes.

To minimize the intensity of stretch marks, after cleansing, apply nontoxic natural products with ingredients such as calendula to reduce dryness. Another soothing herb is aloe vera. Aloe gel applied daily to the belly will minimize dryness and help maintain skin elasticity.

Other external dermal ointments that tone and nourish the skin might include avocado oil or the antioxidant vitamin E.

Because components of essential and other oils can be absorbed through the skin, it is possible for them to affect a growing fetus. As a precaution, make sure that the products you use to discourage stretch marks are safe for baby before putting them on your skin.

A Gentle Touch
One of the most shared and habitual acts of pregnancy is the belly rub. Women seem to do it as universally as the gentle rocking most new mothers undertake when a newborn is in their arms.

Gently rubbing the belly stimulates circulation to the outer skin of the stomach, and is most likely soothing to the developing fetus. But as your belly grows, you can't always see the area where stretch marks develop. Ask your partner to gently rub the oils and ointments suggested here onto your belly. Not only is it calming to mom, but it gets dad involved and helps the skin to relax and stay pliable as it stretches.

Whether you choose a cream, oil, or ointment to care for stretch marks, be sure to recognize and respect the forces of your body and work in harmony with its processes.
