History
Fenugreek's usage dates back to the time of Hippocrates and enjoys an excellent empirical reputation among herbalists. It was used as both a medicinal and culinary spice. Its use as a spice may have triggered its use as a therapeutic agent especially for digestive disorders. A favorite of Hippocrates, Fenugreek has an ancient history as a therapeutic herb, which dates back to the Egyptians and Greeks. Fenugreek has been used frequently as an anti-inflammatory agent, especially with mucous membranes. Lactating women also ingested this herb to increase milk production. As a nutritive tonic for inflamed stomach conditions, alone or in combination, Fenugreek seeds have been a common formula ingredient for many centuries.

Active constituents: The steroidal saponins account for many of the beneficial effects of fenugreek, particularly the inhibition of cholesterol absorption and synthesis.2 The seeds are rich in dietary fiber, which may be the main reason it can lower blood sugar levels in diabetes.3
How much should I take? Due to the somewhat bitter taste of fenugreek seeds, debitterized seeds or encapsulated products are preferred. The typical range of intake is 5-30 grams with each meal or 15-90 grams all at once with one meal. As a tincture, 1-2 ml of fenugreek can be taken up to three times per day.
Are there any side effects or interactions? Use of more than 100 grams of fenugreek seeds daily can cause intestinal upset and nausea. Otherwise, fenugreek is extremely safe.
