 | What is it? |
- Glutamine has traditionally been considered a
"nonessential" amino acid, but current research suggests that it may be
"conditionally essential" under certain metabolic conditions such as exercise.
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and is involved in many metabolic
processes. It is essential to muscle growth, and helps reduce the rate of muscle breakdown
(anti-catabolic).
Glutamine also increases the concentration of plasma
arginine and glutamate, two amino acids linked to muscle-strengthening growth hormone. It
is the single most prominent amino acid and is the first one to loose when trauma occurs
(eg. strenuous exercise, mental stress, illness).
Glutamine also helps to burn more fat while preserving
muscle with growth hormone and is one of the the most effective, healthy ways to lose
weight and keep it off. Also, if a person exercised, even gently, glutamine can maximize
the benefits and minimize the discomfort.
Glutamine has the potential to retard some of the effects
of aging by preserving muscle mass and reducing fat accumulation. Growth hormone helps
build and strengthen muscles and clear acid from body fluids, which at age 30, production
declines. This is associated with muscle loss and increased body fat which Glutamine
supplements helps stall.
Glutamine is also used by the brain and central nervous
system (CNS) to make neurotransmitters. Different neurotransmitters appear to get
metabolized (used up) by heavy mental or physical stress. Glutamine helps increase energy,
helps prevent mental fatigue, and basically keeps the brain "tuned up".

- What does it do?
|
- Glutamine is the most
abundant amino acid
(protein building block) in the body and is involved in more metabolic processes than any
other amino acid. Glutamine is converted to glucose when more glucose is
required by the body as an energy source. It serves as a source of fuel for cells lining
the intestines. Without it, these cells waste away. Its also used by white blood
cells and is important for immune function. In animal research, glutamine has
anti-inflammatory effects. Glutamine in combination with N-acetyl
cysteine promotes the synthesis of glutathione, a naturally occurring antioxidant
that is believed to be protective in people with HIV infection.1 Evidence
indicates that critically ill people are more likely to survive with intravenous glutamine supplementation.2
| Where is it
found? Glutamine is found in many foods high in protein, such as
fish, meat, beans, and dairy. Glutamine has been used in connection with the following conditions
(refer to the individual health concern for complete information):

While taking this
powerful stack in addition to a calorie restricted diet, individuals gained lean mass
while dramatically decreasing body fat. Whether you've dieting to make weight or are
trying to maintain (or even increase) lean mass, studies prove there's no better amino
acid combination than the BCAA/Glutamine stack. |

Who is likely to be
deficient? Few people are glutamine deficient, in part because the body makes
its own. During fasting, starvation, cirrhosis, critical illnesses in general, and weight
loss associated with AIDS and cancer, however, deficiencies often develop.
How much is usually taken?
Healthy people do not need to supplement glutamine. A nutritionally oriented physician
should be consulted for the supplemental use of glutamine for the support of serious
health conditions.
For Weight training,
I usually recommend 2 gms before and 2 gms after. Heavy weight training (1 1/2 hours or
more, or more than 4 days a week), I recommend 4 gms before and 4 gms after. Weight
Loss, I recommend, 1 gm before and 1 gm after.
Are there any side effects
or interactions? No clear toxicity has emerged in glutamine studies.
Certain medications interact in a positive and/or
negative way with glutamine.
The following is a list of medications
that interact in a positive and/or negative way with glutamine.

Within Healthnotes Online, information about the
effects of a particular supplement or herb on a particular condition has been qualified in
terms of the methodology or source of supporting data (for example: clinical, double
blind, meta-analysis, or traditional use). For the convenience of the reader, the
information in the table listing the supplements for particular conditions is also
categorized. The criteria for the categorizations are: Primary indicates there
are reliable and relatively consistent scientific data showing a health benefit.
Secondary indicates there are conflicting, insufficient, or only preliminary
studies suggesting a health benefit or that the health benefit is minimal.
Other indicates that an herb is primarily supported by traditional use or that
the herb or supplement has little scientific support and/or minimal proven health benefit.
