MSM is
a naturally occurring, organic source of dietary sulfur, the mineral that plays a crucial
role in forming muscles, nails, hair, and skin as well as in other bodily functions. Dr.
Stanley Jacob of the Oregon Health Sciences University Medical School in Portland has been
the lead researcher and developer of refined MSM supplements, a product that he derived
from another naturally occurring compound, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). MSM
is chemically very similar to DMSO and is also referred to as DMSO2 and dimethyl sulfone.
Like DMSO,
MSM is a versatile biochemical agent within the body. MSM is becoming an increasingly
popular supplement mainly to reduce allergic reactions to pollen and foods and to relieve
the pain and inflammation of arthritis, sprains, tendinitis, and similar conditions.

- Benefits and uses
|
- MSM has various potential therapeutic applications
that go beyond its ability to relieve allergies and soothe sore muscles and joints. Many
people use it to flush toxins from the body. Others are taking it to help treat chronic
fatigue, psoriasis, acne,
constipation, and gastrointestinal ailments. MSM acts much like an antacid to control
over-acidity in the stomach. Some studies suggest that it may be able to play a part in
treating such serious conditions as lupus, breast cancer, and diabetes. MSM levels
in the body are thought to decline with age.

 |
- Do scientists know how it
works?
|
- Nutritionists recognize the sulfur in MSM as a
crucial nutrient for building healthy cells, forming collagen and other bodily tissues,
and producing certain enzymes, vitamins, and amino acids. Sulfur is an important component
of the hormone insulin, which helps to regulate carbohydrate metabolism and balance blood
sugar levels. MSM may help reduce allergic reactions by blocking allergens or competing
with them for mucous membrane receptor sites. MSM may also increase the body's natural
immune response and act as an antioxidant. Tests have shown that MSM is active
against Giardia lamblia and other parasites.

 |
- Recent findings
|
- Few studies in recent years have focused on the
effects of MSM intake.
| In 1991 Russian
researchers found that prolonged oral administration of DMSO and MSM lessen the
destructive changes in the joints of mice with arthritis. |
| Five years earlier
researchers had shown that DMSO and MSM could protect mice from autoimmune disease and
thereby significantly extend the animals' average life span. |
| Recent
investigations have been more specialized, such as a 1998 study that measured the blood
concentrations of DMSO and MSM in patients receiving bone marrow
transplants, since DMSO is used to preserve stem cells. |

 |
- Food sources
|
- MSM is found in small amounts in various foods,
especially raw, fresh fruits and vegetables and in dairy foods. Seafood and meats lose
their MSM in cooking; MSM is also diminished in processed foods. Green food supplements
such as algae may contain some MSM.

- MSM for
the Skin
|
- Topically
MSM may improve the integrity and resilience of the skin and collagen
tissue, and the building of Healthy Skin Cells while promoting
protective antioxidant activity.
