In John Tateman's fourth summer of working his way through college by painting houses, he felt constantly sick. He suffered perpetual fatigue, lost his appetite and had memory problems. Even his daily thinking grew clouded.

But several visits to Md.'s yielded no solution. So, when one of his friends recommended a naturopathic doctor, John, at wit's end, agreed.

After hearing his story, the naturopath recognized that John was probably suffering from heavy metal poisoning-from the paint he was scraping off houses and the toxic solvents he inhaled from the paint as it dried.

The doctor took a sample of hair from the nape of John's neck and sent it to a laboratory for heavy metal analysis. The tests showed high levels of lead and mercury. The naturopath placed him on a program to chelate the heavy metals out of his body and improve his liver function. The program required John to increase his consumption of beans, eat more vitamin C-rich foods (such as citrus, kiwi fruit and strawberries) as well as pectin (fruits), and seaweed products. A few months later, John's hair analysis showed that the heavy metals were slowly leaving his body. He continued to paint during the summers. But, the summertime increase in his body's heavy metals did not occur as it had before he adopted the program to help remove these toxins from his body.

John's exposure to environmental toxins is only one example of our bombardment by deleterious chemicals in our environment. Today, people are exposed to chemicals in far greater Concentrations than were previous generations. As a result of the industrial revolution and the post-World War II petrochemical revolution, toxins have accumulated in the human system faster than they can be eliminated.

"People now carry within their bodies a modern-day chemical cocktail derived from industrial chemicals, pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, anesthetics and the residues of legal and illegal drugs," says Marshall Mandell, M.D., father of the field of bioecologic medicine. "The current level of chemicals in food and water and the indoor and outdoor environment has lowered our threshold of resistance to disease and has altered our metabolism, causing enzyme dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances."

"A body with a healthy immune system, efficient organs of elimination and detoxification and a sound circulatory and nervous system can handle a great deal of toxicity," says Leon Chaitow, ND., D.O. "But damage from chronic exposure to pollutants means that restoring these functions to organs and systems can be accomplished only through detoxification, including fasting, chelation and nutritional, herbal and homeopathic methods. These methods accelerate the body's own natural cleansing processes. These therapies will dominate medical thinking in the years to come.

The Detoxification System
The body's detoxification system is just as complex and awe inspiring as other bodily systems, such as the nervous, circulatory and immune systems. The body eliminates toxins either by directly neutralizing them or excreting them in urine or feces. They may also leave through the lungs and skin, to a much lesser degree. When toxin ingestion increases past a certain point, the body's defenses are overwhelmed and these toxins build up within body tissues, usually in fat.

Naturally occurring dietary toxins and contaminants, environmental chemicals (tobacco, drugs, pesticides, food coloring and food additives) and mutagens from cooking, hormones in meats and invading microbes, pose a serious threat to health. Fortunately, intestinal enzymes transform many of these chemicals and pollutants into other substances that are transported to the liver where they are rendered harmless. About 25% of detoxification occurs within the intestinal lining; the rest occurs in the liver.

Elson Haas, M.D., Director of the Mann Clinic of Preventive Medicine and Health Education in San Rafael, California, believes that "the process of detoxification through special cleansing diets as well as juice and water fasts is the missing link to rejuvenating the body and preventing such chronic diseases as cancer, cardiovascular problems, arthritis, diabetes and obesity.

Dr. Haas has practiced juice fasting regularly for nearly 20 years, and advises his patients to undertake some form of detoxification periodically to clear wastes and dead cells and to revitalize the body's natural functions and healing capacities. Dr. Haas points out that along with greater mental clarity, the most important and longest lasting effect of detoxification therapy is the reduction of immune system stress.

Fasting

The quickest way to detoxify your body is through fasting. But before you choose to fast, the routes of elimination from the body must be open and fully functional. No point in stirring up toxins if no path of elimination is open or if toxins are released from cells faster than the body can render them harmless. The best time to fast is when the livers detoxification enzyme systems are working at their most efficient and the bowel is healthy enough to excrete toxins rapidly.

bulletTypes of Fasts
The two types of fasts are water  fasts and juice fasts. During a water fast, just water is ingested for 24-36 hours. Be sure to consume no less than four and no more than eight pints of water during the fast. On the last day, eat raw foods (fruit salad only,) plus the recommended amount of water. (Consult your health practitioner before embarking on a fast.)

For a juice  fast, Evarts G. Loomis, M.D. prescribes vegetable juices (equal parts carrot, diluted with water 1:1, and celery). If desired, green vegetables such as green beans, zucchini, watercress and parsley can be added. 1-Ic also recommends a "detoxifying cocktail" that combines garlic, lemon juice, grapefruit juice and olive oil. Drink this at bedtime since the liver, a major organ for detoxification, is most active between 11:00 P.M. and 1:00 A.M, according to traditional Chinese medicine.
