Water is also included as a macronutrient source. Every living organism consists mostly of water, the human muscles are comprised of over 70% water. All living things require a lot of water to maintain normal life processes, and also must maintain its water supply near normal, or death will occur. Humans can live without food for more than two months, but cannot live for more than a week without water.

If the body loses more than 20% of its normal water content, a painful death will occur. Water is the basis of all the bodily fluids including digestive juices, blood, urine, lymph and perspiration, digestion, circulation and lubrication. Water is also an essential transport mechanism for several nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and even carbohydrates. It serves an important role in all cellular activity. A diet deficient in water results in thirst, and dehydration. Humans must take in about 1 1/2 quarts (2.4 L) of water daily. This can be in the form of beverages or by water in food.

Overtraining can result if no, or little water in ingested. If the water intake is too low, the ability to transport nutrients can become compromised, resulting in a decrease of muscle fullness, and a toxic buildup of ammonia, urea, uric acid, and other substances, which would begin to accumulate in the body. This can occur with the use of Creatine or caffeine base products. Creatine needs water to be present. This may be the reason why some see very little gains with Creatine, upset stomach, or back pains (kidneys).  Also, a increased amount of water should be taken to avoid dehydration when increased activity results in sweating. Sweating is a method which the body utilizes to cool itself down, and in the process, water is lost and requires to be replenished. Water also regulates the body's temperature. However, more than 1 1/2 gallons of water ingested within an hour can be dangerous!

To maintain normal, adequate hydration, a simple calculation of bodyweight, multiplied by .55 will equal the amount of water an individual should drink in ounces on a daily basic. For example, an individual who weighed 200 lbs, should drink 110 oz. (200 x .55) of water every day. If more strenuous activates which involve more sweating, such as long-distance running or exercising in extreme heat, the water amount should be increased by multiplying the bodyweight by .66.

Carbo Drinks

Watery solutions help dissolve nutrients and carry them to all parts of an organism. Through chemical reactions, the organism can turn nutrients into energy, or into materials it requires to grow or to repair itself. These chemical reactions can only take place in a watery solution. Water is also important for the skin texture and organs to properly function. Water is also necessary to transport waste products, in urine and feces. It can also aid in flushing water-retaining sodium from the system.
