Known in China as Yin Yang Huo, horny goat weed was
first described in classic Chinese medicinal texts dating back more than two thousand
years. The Chinese use the term Yin Yang Huo in reference to any of several species of
epimedium, a leafy groundcover that grows most abundantly at higher altitudes.
In the spring of 2000, pharmacist Mel Rich, founder
and chief formulator of the Bodyonics natural fitness line, asked me to research horny
goat weed in China. As the primary herb in Bodyonics' Horny Goat Weed formula, Mel wanted to better understand
its place in Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern medical practice.
Knowing I would need the help of local experts, I
made contact with Jerry Wu, president of Shanghai Dingxun Botanical Productsa highly
reputable maker of herbal extracts, including horny goat weed. Jerry graciously offered
his assistance, in the form of guides and drivers. Soon, my wife Shahannah and I had
boarded a jet from Boston to Shanghaithe booming, skyscraper-studded megalopolis on
China's southeastern coast.

Summit: What the Experts Said |
On our first evening in hot, muggy Shanghai,
Shahannah and I gathered for dinner with six experts in Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM). Our dinner companions were three practicing medical doctorsincluding Dr. Hu
Jinhua, the leading brain specialist and chief of Longhua Hospitalplus a
gastroenterologist, a pharmacognocist (pharmacist expert in herbs), and a plant chemist.
During our conversation about the role of herbs in
Chinese medicine, I popped the question foremost in my mind. "What do you think about
epimedium? Is it truly effective as a sex-enhancer?" There were smiles all around,
and the affirmative nodding of heads. "Oh, yes, yes." exclaimed Dr. Kuang.
"We have all used epimedium in our practices. It is the very best sexual tonic for
both men and women." |

I probed further. Does the plant truly help with
erectile function? Both Dr. Kuang and Dr. Xiao Tong Shen explained that in clinical
practice, they have used epimedium to successfully treat erectile problems, to boost
waning libido, and to rebuild youthful sexual vitality. "It gives you back your
sexual strength," noted Dr. Kuang with emphasis. Hearing such unequivocal endorsement
of horny goat weed's libido effects from local medical experts strongly supports Horny Goat Weed's ancient reputation as the real deal.
- Top Sex Herb in a Massive Market
- When I told Jerry Wu of Dingxun Botanicals that I
wanted to see herb markets, he replied, "You must see China's biggest medicinal herb
market, in Bozhou." Jerry's assistants would drive us from Shanghai to China's
Central Plains region at the far northwestern corner of neighboring Anhui
Provincehome to some 600,000 acres of medicinal herb farms. Occupying eighty-five
acres, Bozhou's herb market houses more than 6,000 traders, and is undoubtedly the largest
botanical bazaar on earth. No amount of prior explanation could have adequately prepared
us for its grand scale. The central market building was jammed with people and an amazing
array of herbs.
Throughout the giant main hall, we found large
displays of horny goat weed. When dealers noticed our interest in it, they broke out in
smiles. "Very good for sex." One told us. Another remarked, "That will make
you sexually strong." Even amidst the myriad choices in this massive marketplace, all
declared horny goat weed the reigning king of herbal sex-enhancers.
