| The carpal tunnel is an anatomic area at the palm
side of the wrist which is bordered by either bone or rigid ligaments. through this
"tunnel" passes, among other important structures, the mediun nerve. This
nerve serves the thumb, index and middle fingers of the hand in both sensory as well as
muscle functions. because the tunnel is rigid, any swelling or compression in the area
presses on the nerve and causes symptoms. The immediate cause of the compression is
usually a thickening of the ligament that joins the two forearm bones at their further
ends, just one to two inches from the palm. Dr. Ross Gordon diagnoses carpal tunnel
syndrome when he finds three things: impaired feeling in the hand (s), a tingling
sensation radiating out into the hands, and a worsening of the numbness and tingling when
the wrist is flexed as hard as possible for 30 to 90 seconds.

Instead of Surgery |
- In his book, Dr.
Wright's Book of Nutritional Therapy (Rodale Press, Emmaus, PA, 1979), Dr.
Jonathan Wright describes how he treated a women with a bad case of carpal
tunnel in both hands. By the time she saw him, her grip strength was poor, she
had a slight puffiness of both hands and the tendons on the back of her hands
were not standing out as they should. Further clues were small, tender nodules
over the furthest joints of three of her fingers. Last, she could not perform
what he calls the "Ellis test." Keeping her palm straight, she was unable to
curl her fingers inward so the fingertips touched the palm. He calls it the
Ellis test because the B6/carpal tunnel connection was discovered by Dr. John
Ellis and reported in his book Vitamin B6, The Doctor's Report. It is an
excellent volume.

Dr. Wright told his patient
to take 200 milligrams of vitamin B6, along with a high dose B-complex formula three times
daily. When she reported back in three weeks she said her symptoms were definitely
improving, the numbness and tingling were gone and remained only in the center of her
palms. She was no longer stiff in the mornings, and her hands didn't feel nearly as
"tight." When her improvement seemed to slow, Dr. Wright added 250 mg of magnesium and one tablespoon of flax seed oils for fatty acids essential to healthy
tissues and ligaments. Many other physicians report success
using vitamin B6 for carpal tunnel syndrome. Louis S. Moore, M.D., of Naples, Florida
reports that 100 mg. of vitamin B6, three times daily may reduce the swelling from carpal
tunnel syndrome.1 Robert D. Reynolds, Ph.D.,
Department of Nutrition and Medical Dietetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago,
reports that 100 to 200 mg. of vitamin B6 daily can relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel
syndrome in as little as 12 weeks. 2
Even conventional medicine has to admit vitamin b6
works. Allan L.Berstein, M.D. at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Hayward, California
discovered it relieved symptoms in all 20 of the carpal tunnel patients he examined. He
determined B6 was safe at a 200 mg dose. 3
When you choose to supplement with one B vitamin,
include an easily-absorbable B-complex formula since the B vitamins work together and are
compromised by stress and intestinal disorders.

- Aiding the Healing Process
|
- Eliminating the cause of carpal
tunnel syndrome is the first step. But there are foods and nutrients that can be used to
help reduce the inflammation that causes pressure on the median nerve and nourish the
damaged tendon so healing can occur quickly.
For sprains or stretch ligaments, I always recommend
vitamin C with bioflaonoids to treat the pain and injury. Bioflavonoids, a group of
substances related to vitamin C, have been shown in studies to speed the healing of
bruised ligaments, not surprising considering they are powerful anti-inflammatories. A
report in Medical Times stated that athletes who took either vitamin C healed twice as
fast as athletes who took either vitamin C alone or no supplements whatsoeven. Another
study found that injured football players who took 200 to 600 mg daily of citrus
bioflavonids returned to the game in one-fourth the time of those not taking supplements. 5
