| Lay off the alcohol. It may increase the desire, but it
decreases the performance, and especially so over time, says Robert N. Butler, M.D.,
professor of geriatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of
New York in New York City and author of Love and Sex after 60. A few drinks before
sex can make an erection less firm and more difficult to achieve, Dr. Butler says. Up to
80 percent of men who drink heavily suffer sexual side effects including erection
problems, sterility, and loss of desire. Even heavier drinking over time destroys
testicular cells, leaving men with shrunken testicles and a reduced sex drive. |
| Start working out. Regular exercise will do the obvious by
improving your body and, therefore, improving your self-image. But researchers have found
that exercise may be an aphrodisiac in itself. A study conducted at the University of
California, San Diego, found that men who exercised 60 minutes a day for about three days
per week improved their sex lives. The men reported having more sex and even
more-satisfying orgasms. As the men improved their fitness levels, they said the sex kept
getting better. But don't overdo it, warns Dr. Crenshaw, because exercising to the extreme
can be detrimental to sex. Also, you should
start from a modest pace and build up, says Dr. Butler. If you're not already in good
physical condition, you might do more harm than good if you start with an exercise plan
that's too rigorous. |
| Throw out the smokes. If cancer doesn't scare you, how about
smoking's effects on sex? Nicotine constricts blood vessels, making it hard for blood to
flow to the penis. Long-term smoking can severely hamper erections, says Dr. Cooper,
"When smokers stop smoking, many of the erection problems disappear." |
| Check out your medicine cabinet. Your medication could be
robbing you of that erection. "Many prescription medications eliminate sex drive and
erections," says Dr. Crenshaw, who is also the author of Sexual Pharmacology.
The most common perpetrators include antidepressants (Prozac and Elavil), blood pressure
medications (Atenolol, Besimil, and Diupres), and anti-ulcer drugs (Tagamet and Pepcid
AC). Even over-the-counter drugs such as antihistamines and Dramamine can cause erection
problems or can reduce sexual desire. If you suspect your medication is hurting your love
life, ask your doctor to switch to another type of medication or to lower your dosage, she
says. |
| Keep healthy. Heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, obesity,
and diabetes
can all make men impotent.
|
| Remember your member. It's a cycle, says Dr. Cooper. In order
to have healthy erections, men have to keep having erections. "Young men have five to
six erections every night because it gets needed oxygen to the penis through the blood. As
a man gets older, he gets less and less of these nocturnal erections, and it really
affects the health of the penis," Dr. Cooper says. So to make up for the erections
that you're not having during the night, it's good to have more during your waking hours
to keep the penis healthy. "It's not just for fun, it's for health," he says. |
| Think of it as longer, better sex. Even if you are the picture
of perfect health, it's going to take you longer to get an erection as you get older. So
work with it, Dr. McCarthy says. It means that you and your partner will have to spend
more time fooling around before intercourse, and of course, that's far from bad. "You
have to get used to a different rhythm. Become more sensuous instead of overreacting to
it," he says. If you don't adjust to this change, then you could be in for real
problems. Many men who don't accept this fact of life end up panicking with every sexual
experience. Some men can't get an erection because they get so nervous about not being
able to get an erection. |
