Lipotropic and Thermogenic fat burners are two burgeoning sub-categories within the larger weight loss category. But do you know what they are and how they work?

After twenty years of hearing "what is the best weight loss, fat burning product" which is not a easy question to answer, I decided to add this information.  Not every product is for every person. Their is no such thing as "the best weight loss product," because each person stored fat and burns differently. The category of fat burned can be divided into two areas; lipotropic products and thermogenic products. In the simplest of terms, lipotropics are any products or ingredients that have the ability to dissolve and metabolize fats. In essence, they emulsify stored fats and dump them into the blood stream to make them more available for the body to use as an energy source. Thermogenics refers to the creation of heat to increase metabolism and burn fat. Thermognic products usually raise the body temperature by about one degree, increasing the metabolism to burn fat more effectively and act as an overall energizer. They may also have the side effect of depressing the appetite. How these two categories work depends on the goal of the consumer. In the body, calories are used in three basic ways. First, energy is required for everyday functions like breathing, digestion and other process that keep the body alive, and calories are consequently burned even during sleep. Second, calories are used during the body’s process of thermogenesis, which manifests during exercise and activity. Third, calories that are not used during the basic functions required to keep the body alive or through activity are stored as fat. Simple enough, but it does get a little trickier. Brown adipose tissue, or BAT, is a type of fat that’s technically classified as a gland. Genetic or environmental factors--like aging, having a baby, or a genetic tendency toward obesity--can cause BAT to slow down or become dormant. While lipotropic products can mobilize stored fat and move it into the blood stream, if BAT isn’t activated, fat will either remain in the blood stream or go back into fat cells. With that in mind, manufacturers of fat burner products use variety of specific ingredients that both mobilize stored fat and then help to get it out of the body. Some of the most widely used ingredients include the following:

Ma huang

Ma Huang (stimulant) - In spite of the on going controversy about ephedra, it still seems to be "one of the most efficacious and safe ingredients for fat burning, unless it’s abused". Ma huang helps speed up metabolism and increase energy to burn calories and help extend the time of a workout. Research

Betaine/Lipase

Betaine - This is a vitamin-like compound that helps draw fat away from the liver to be converted to energy.

Chromium

Chromium (non-stimulant) – Long used in weight-loss formulations, chromium is classified as a metabolic substance, which stabilized blood sugar and plays a key role in insulin function. Blood sugar is the key to weight control. Here’s how blood sugar works. Refined carbohydrates (sugar) are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, where they elevate blood sugar levels. High blood sugar causes the body to produce more insulin, which converts sugar into fat and lowers the blood sugar. As a result, a person feels tired and sleepy, craves sweets and overeats. Research

L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine (non-stimulant)Member of the amino acid group. Carnitine helps to utilize fat as a source of energy. It allows the liver and muscle to retain glycogen (stored sugars) greatly extending the ability for longer periods of exercise.

Chitosan

Chitosan (non-stimulant) - Chitosan really is not a fat burner - but a fat blinder. Chitosan aids weight loss by inhibiting fat absorption in the intestines so the undigested fat can be excreted from the body.  30-40% absorption of fat from the foods you eat has been reported. The less fat you intake, the more fat the body can burn naturally. 

Choline, Inositol, and Methionine (fat burners)

Fat Burners (non-stimulant)These three products appears to be associated primarily with the utilization of fats and cholesterol in the body. It prevents fats from accumulating in the liver and facilitates the movement of fats into the cells. Fats are moved from the liver to the cell with the aid of these three products.
(HCA)  (non-stimulant) - A rare organic acid similar to citric acid found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and grapefruits, but with remarkably different property's: HCA has been shown to reduce appetite and inhibit fat production without stimulating the central nervous system. CitriMax is extracted from the fruit of garcinia cambogia, which has been used for centuries by people of Southeast Asia to make meals more "filling." Here's how scientists believe it works: When foods are eaten, carbohydrates are digested and broken down into glucose, the special blood sugar  the body uses for energy. Glucose molecules that are not immediately used for energy are stored in the body's liver and muscles as glycogen.  When glycogen stores become full, excess molecules of glucose are converted into fat by an enzyme called ATP-citrate lyase. HCA temporarily inhibits the enzyme, diverting calories away from fat synthesis and towards glycogen production, stimulating the satiety or "fullness" signal to the brain. Importantly, CitriMax works without causing changes in heart rate or blood pressure, nor interfering with sleep, which other diet products such as: Ma huang, Green tea, Kola Nut and Guarana. Those who are now a restrict caffeine diet can use CitriMax as a choice of weight loss. While the majority of studies on HCA have been done on animals, one study in humans showed that HCA (440 mg three times per day 30 minutes before meals for 8 weeks) caused 68% more weight loss, greater fat loss and reduced appetite compared to people taking a placebo. While another study showed that people taking HCA (500 mg three times per day before meals for 8 weeks) resulted in 215% greater weight loss than those taking a placebo, without the side effects associated with diet stimulants. Enzymes

A lack of enzymes results in poor breakdown and poor absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Fats are the hardest food to digest and also take the longest. A healthy digestive system breaks down fats to provide nourishment and energy for the body so less fat will be stored. Research

Pyruvate

(non-stimulant)Pyruvate is a fat-modulating agent and nutrient that has been shown to increase the loss of fat without a corresponding loss of muscle. Supplementation of Pyrurate increases cellular respiration, or the amount of energy the mitochondria (the cells' metabolic furnace) use. The more energy used, the less the body stores. Pyruvate works best when accompanied by exercise. I would not recommend this product for those who do not exercise at least 3 times a weeks.  Research
(non-stimulant)Some research has shown that a combination of synthetic aspirin, caffeine and ephedra help to burn fat if used in the exact ratios as those in studies. White willow bark is used as a natural alternative to aspirin.

A reasonable amount of research backs up many of these ingredients. Pyruvate, for example, has been shown in university studies to increase overall fat loss in dieters by 37 percent by increasing metabolism and fat utilization. A study at the University of Copenhagen determined that in an exact ratio, aspirin, caffeine and ephedra created a potent fat-burning compound. The combination of ephedra, caffeine and aspirin was shown to have a marked effect on overall weight loss over eight weeks, with sustained weight loss over the next five months without restriction of calories as reported in the International Journal of Obesity (1993). In spite of the research that were done on these ingredients, some company will use this research to sell their products. With claims of large amounts of weight loss, using their products. My rules have and always will be that fat-burning supplements are just that; Supplements. They should be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet and exercise regimen. Chitosan - Fat Blockers

Fat burner automatically get classified as weight loss products, but they’re not technically weight loss products. In the process of losing fat, you may actually gain weight, since fat is lighter than muscle. Ever though body fat percentages may go down, the numbers on the scales may go up. Gymnema Sylvestre, the common name, "gurmar", means sugar destroyer and is also known as the sugar blocker. Citrus aurantium , also known as zhi shi or synephrine, is of the same chemical family as ephedra (now Banned) but is milder in its actions. It helps to control appetite, stimulate metabolism, increase energy, and regulate the absorption of calories in much the same way as ephedra without the "physical high". So most people using these products can believe that since they are eating less food, they can eat that candy bar, donuts or chocolate cake. None of these products will work without changes in exercise and diet. You can’t pop a pill, sit on the couch, have a half a box of bon bons and expect to lose pounds.
