What to do about Water Retention
You step on your bathroom scale, only to find that it's registering an unexpected extra 2 lbs. You've been dieting-what gives? or you try one of these new miracle weight loss products, and the scale registers 2 Ibs lighter in the first day!  Chances are that your body is retaining water, not stockpiling fat and that new miracle weight loss product, contains diuretics. The extra pounds of water can and will make you look and feel "fat." Water retention, medically known as edema, can be caused by a number of factors, from normal shifts in body fluid to excess dietary sodium and diseases such as heart or kidney disease.

The amount of water you drink is going to play a key role in water retention. Water not only is essential in dissolving and transporting nutrients such as oxygen and minerals to the body but can also help in the digestion, assimilation, metabolism, elimination, and the waste removal in the body. Water is also  necessary with weight loss. Water intake helps in flushing out toxins from the fat cells, which are stored in fat tissue and released into the bloodstream. In order to burn fat cells, the fat cells first will have to be free of excess water and toxins. The body will hold on to excess water for survival if adequate amounts of water is not supplied.  Water is a critical nutrient for many bodily processes. When you are dehydrated, your body excretes less water, and bloating can set in. For optimum health, the National Research Council recommends an intake of 12 cups of water a day for men and 9 cups a day for women.  Remember: In with the good, out with the bad.

Constipation
You should also strive to keep your intestines clear and not allow foods to remain long in the process of digestion. If you don't have frequent bowel movements, you absorb poison from partially digested foods in the intestinal tract. The constipation encourages the body to retain fluids to dilute these poisons. Constipation is, in fact, the most common problem I see in relation to water retention.  See Food Combining for more information on digestion

Herbal Diuretic

Another option for losing excess fluid is to take prescription diuretics, but these tend to flush vital minerals from your body. A gentler solution is to supplement with herbs. Uva ursi is perhaps the most well-known herbal diuretic. Derived from the leaves of the bearberry tree, uva ursi contains arbutin, a natural chemical that increases urine output. Horse chestnut is another diuretic herb of value. Two of its active constituents-aescin and aesculine-have demonstrated moderate diuretic activity. Horse chestnut is also used to promote leg vein circulation in Europe for many years. It protects against and reduces leg swelling and has no known side effects.  Buchu, an herb native to South Africa, has a long folk history of use as a diuretic. Its leaves are processed into supplements marketed for the regulation of water balance.
In its section on pharmacological actions of approved herbs, the German Commission E Monographs (American Botanical Council, 1998) lists several other diuretic herbs. Among the more familiar: birch leaf, butcher's broom, cola nut, dandelion root,  horsetail and juniper berry. Dandelion contains two diuretic chemicals, eudesmanolides and germacranolides, as well as the mineral potassium, which helps to regulate water balance in the body. If you supplement with herbs, follow dosage recommendations on the label. Use diuretic herbs on a short-term basis and with the full knowledge of your physician for those with any medical problems. Of all natural diuretics, perhaps the best is water, as I mention at the beginning of this article. Also See: Essential Water and Metabolism & Water
FACT
Why Lose Weight?
People say it's what's inside that counts— but the real world rarely responds that way. In fact, being overweight is a triple threat:

* Overweight people suffer job discrimination and romantic rejection.
* Excess weight fosters inactivity, fatigue, weak muscles and brittle bones.
* Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis.
