- Physically Fit Inside And Out
- A women's quest for a beautiful body may result in changes that are more than
just skin deep. All right, exercise is good for you, you know that.
It burns calories, strengthens muscles, conditions your heart, and improves the overall
quality of your life. But if that information is not enough to get you sweating on a
regular basis, consider this: Recent studies have shown that exercise can reduce your risk
of developing osteoporosis, a condition affecting women, making their bones brittle and
highly susceptible to stress fractures. How can exercise help? Exercise strengthens your
bones, which like other tissues in your body, responds to stress placed on them by getting
stronger. Bone mass in women usually begins to decline after the age of 35. This bone loss
becomes even more noticeable after menopause because lower estrogen levels make it more
difficult for bones to retain calcium. A regular exercise regime can help combat this loss
and retain healthy bone structure. You need not and should not, however, become overly
obsessed with fitness.
-
- If you are a women who is
still menstruating, doctors warn to take heed. Though regular
exercise can result in the pleasant side effect of reducing the
severity of your periods and premenstrual symptoms (especially
cramping), too much exercise could cause your periods to stop
altogether, resulting in a condition called amenorrhea. Some women
might think that not having to period, sounds good. But,
nevertheless, a loss of your period results in reduced estrogen
levels in your system which could actually contribute to bone loss.
This occurs more often than you might think. Of all women who
exercise regularly, at least 15 to 20 percent will lose their period
at one time or another due to over-exercising. according to Los
Angeles chiropractor Dr. David Tannenbaum, who has reported case
studies on chiropractic's influence on menstrual cycles, "A
combination of a low caloric diet, over-exercising and lifestyle may
be the culprit. A regular exercise and healthy eating habits that
does not push the body beyond its limits will rarely induce
amenorrhea." Though a remedy to this problem may be as simple
as increasing caloric intake or inducing the degree of intensity of
your exercise program, always consult your physician for proper
treatment. Early attention to a menstrual cycle that has become
irregular is the key to avoiding problems in the future.

 | Natural Hormone Replacement
Therapy |
- Following is a natural approach
to menopause that you can adapt for your own use. You may need 1-2 months to ascertain the
entire effects of the steps. On the other hand, some relief may be immediate.
- Step
1
The basic program is one you already know. Eat lots of fresh foods,
particularly steamed veggies and salads, get enough protein, and drink plenty of water (at
least eight glasses daily). Eat good fats. (Raw nuts, avocados, fish.) Experiment with
Nina Shandler's soy and flax laden foods. Stay away from sugar and other processed
carbohydrates. They stress the body and encourage weight gain. Get sufficient rest,
relaxation, and exercise. Continue your multivitamin-mineral (you especially need
the B vitamins); up your intake of vitamin E (1200 IU is reported to help with hot
flashes); vitamin A (10,000 IU for skin integrity); and increase vitamin C to at least 3
grams (I take two of Ester-C for adrenal support). Make sure you are taking a bone
building formula with at least 1500 mg of calcium. (A new one, designed by Dr. Susan Love,
contains strontium as recommended in Nutrition News. See "Down to the
Bone.") |
- Step
2
Add a woman's herbal. There are many fine herbal formulas on the market,
using traditional Chinese herbs, traditional Western herbs, and mixtures of the two. They
frequently include Vitex (chaste berry), dong quai,
licorice,
and black
cohosh. Black cohosh extract was a savior for me when I wrote the first edition of
"Hot Flash!"
I purchased a brand approved in Germany for menopausal symptoms and the most widely tested
herb of its kind. Although it only took the edge off my hot flashes, it completely
eliminated vaginal and genital skin thinning. Testing has shown that most women have
results in 4-12 weeks. It was nearly four months before I got mine. It was worth the wait. |
- Step
3
Get some progesterone. As noted, at menopause, the body no longer
makes progesterone. Perhaps the most important thing about this hormone is that it helps
the body to lay down calcium. In addition, many women find that using it completely knocks
out their symptoms. If you have found a physician who will prescribe natural (human)
hormones for you, you can take progesterone (pregnenolone) orally. |
- Step
4
If your brain's not working the way it used to... try some "smart
pills." My thoughts get slippery whenever I'm under stress. I use ginkgo
biloba and a brain food formula containing phosphatidyl serine. Perhaps because
my brain is used to receiving this food, I often have results within a few hours. |
- Step
5
Last resort, find a doctor who will prescribe natural hormones for you. |

- Calcium
|
While the decrease in
bone mass accelerates at menopause, it begins around age 35. After 35, women lose one
percent of their bone mass per year. So be sure to consume enough calcium:
(1,000 mg. a day) for women over 35, and 1,500 mg. for women over 45 and over. |
- DHEA
|
(dehydroepiandrosterone):
Is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands. It is readily converted into estrogen,
testosterone, progesterone, and corticosterone. For over a decade, the DHEA
phyto-precursors provided in wild yam have been providing women with an alternative to
synthetic hormones. DHEA has been especially recommended for PMS and menopausal symptoms.
For many women, two of the more distressing consequences of menopause are the threat of
osteoporosis and that of heart disease. Reversing Osteoporosis, cites a strong association between low DHEA
and bone loss in post-menopausal women. |
- Progesterone
|
is the precursor for progesterone
and DHEA (a feel-good steroid hormone that is a precursor for androsterone,
testosterone, and the estrogens). At menopause, the body no longer makes progesterone.
Perhaps the most important thing about this hormone is that it helps the body to lay down
calcium. In addition, many women find that using it completely knocks out their symptoms.
For over a decade, the DHEA and Progesterone have been providing women with an alternative
to synthetic hormones. For many women, two of the more difficulties consequences of
menopause are the treat of osteoporosis and that of heart disease. In Reversing
Osteoporosis, it cites a strong association between low DHEA and bone loss in
post-menopausal women. Both estrogen and progesterone help to keep bone mass at healthy
levels. Estrogen inhibits the robbing of calcium from the bone while progesterone
stimulates bone formation. Since DHEA helps with the synthesis of both the bone of these
hormones as well as protecting against heart disease, it is easy to understand why DHEA
and Pregnenolone is so widely recommended as an natural alternative. |
